Μετά από 16 χρόνια ο Τοντ Φιλντ επιστρέφει εντυπωσιακά με την τρίτη μεγάλου μήκους ταινία του, σκηνοθετώντας μία συγκλονιστική Κέιτ Μπλάνσετ, η οποία «κουβαλάει» επάνω της με άνεση ολόκληρο το έργο και παραδίδει δωρεάν μαθήματα υποκριτικής στην καλύτερη ταινία της τρέχουσας κινηματογραφικής σεζόν. Το εξαιρετικό «Tár», που έχει ήδη αποσπάσει έξι υποψηφιότητες για Όσκαρ – ανάμεσα στα οποία Καλύτερης Ταινίας, Σκηνοθεσίας ενώ είναι και το αδιαμφισβήτητο φαβορί για το Όσκαρ Ά Γυναικείου Ρόλου – κυκλοφορεί στις εγχώριες κινηματογραφικές αίθουσες από την Πέμπτη 9 Φεβρουαρίου.
Μετά το ντεμπούτο του με την «Αναπαράσταση» το 1970 και τις «Μέρες του ’36» του 1972, την σκυτάλη παίρνει ο εκπληκτικός «Θίασος» του 1975. Αυτή είναι η τρίτη μεγάλου μήκους ταινία του σημαντικότερου Έλληνα σκηνοθέτη, η οποία κυκλοφορεί σε επανέκδοση από την Πέμπτη 9 Φεβρουαρίου. Μέσα από την ταινία του ο Θόδωρος Αγγελόπουλος, αναβιώνει μία Ελλάδα αληθινή. Μία γκρίζα Ελλάδα, ματωμένη από τον Εμφύλιο, με συννεφιασμένους ουρανούς, εγκαταλειμμένα χωριά και τους ατελείωτους ερειπωμένους δρόμους της φτωχικής επαρχίας. Είναι η ιστορία της Ελλάδας μέσα από την περιπλάνηση ενός περιοδεύοντος θιάσου.
Ο Φρανσουά Οζόν – που ποτέ δεν έκρυψε την αγάπη του για τον Ράινερ Βέρνερ Φασμπίντερ – πραγματοποιεί με το νέο του φιλμ έναν ατόφιο φόρο τιμής σε μια μνημειώδη ταινία του μεγάλου Γερμανού δημιουργού, που δεν είναι άλλη από «Τα Πικρά Δάκρυα της Πέτρα Φον Καντ». Πρωταγωνιστούν: ο υπέροχος Ντενίς Μενοσέτ, η γοητευτική Ιζαμπέλ Ατζανί και η σπουδαία μούσα του Γερμανού σκηνοθέτη, Χάνα Σιγκούλα. Η ταινία «Peter von Kant» κυκλοφορεί στους Κινηματογράφους από την Πέμπτη 9 Φεβρουαρίου.
Όλα τα ντοκιμαντέρ διαγωνίζονται για 6 επίσημα βραβεία και 14 παράλληλα, τα περισσότερα από τα οποία συνοδεύονται από χρηματικά έπαθλα, ενώ η ταινία που θα κερδίσει τον Χρυσό Αλέξανδρο στο Διεθνές Διαγωνιστικό βρίσκει αυτόματα θέση στη λίστα προεπιλογής για το Όσκαρ Καλύτερου Ντοκιμαντέρ. Όπως έγινε με την ταινία «A House Μade of Splinters» του Σάιμον Λέρενγκ Βίλμοντ, η οποία κέρδισε πέρυσι τον Χρυσό Αλέξανδρο και τώρα είναι ανάμεσα στις πέντε ταινίες που διεκδικούν το Όσκαρ Καλύτερου Ντοκιμαντέρ.
For the poster of the 25th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival, they asked the artist to draw inspiration from the heart, our inner map and eyes in a world that is constantly getting bigger and smaller at the same time. In cinema, as well as in the arts as a whole, the heart stands as an ever-lasting symbol, a reminder of the human condition, whether filled with joy or broken in pieces.
Το 1963 κυκλοφορεί στους Κινηματογράφους η θρυλική «Περιφρόνηση» του Ζαν-Λυκ Γκοντάρ. Πρόκειται για μία ταινία – σημείο αναφοράς στην σπουδαία φιλμογραφία του κορυφαίου Γάλλου σκηνοθέτη, ο οποίος εδώ σκηνοθετεί τους: Μπριζίτ Μπαρντό, Μισέλ Πικολί, Τζακ Πάλανς και Φριτς Λανγκ, σε μία ερωτική τραγωδία. Το φιλμ προβάλλεται στην τηλεόραση δίνοντας μας την ευκαιρία να την απολαύσουμε έστω και στην μικρή οθόνη, 60 χρόνια μετά την πρώτη κυκλοφορία της.
«Η καρδιά είναι όσα αγαπάμε και όσα αποδοκιμάζουμε. Είναι το αίμα μας και η ψυχή μας και κρύβεται πίσω από κάθε ανθρώπινη ιστορία», λέει χαρακτηριστικά ο Σουηδός ζωγράφος και εικονογράφος Ντάνιελ Ένγκνεους, ο οποίος υπογράφει την οπτική ταυτότητα του 25ου Φεστιβάλ Ντοκιμαντέρ Θεσσαλονίκης.
Ο βραβευµένος µε Όσκαρ, Σαμ Μέντες (American Beauty, 1917) εµπνέεται από την εκρηκτική ατµόσφαιρα του τέλους της δεκαετίας του ’70 και των αρχών της δεκαετίας του ’80. Πρόκειται για μία περίοδος µε πολιτικές αναταραχές, αλλά και δηµιουργικής άνθισης της βρετανικής µουσικής και κουλτούρας. Ο Βρετανός σκηνοθέτης, επιστρέφει στο κοινωνικό και ανθρωποκεντρικό Σινεμά με μία ταινία Υποψήφια για Όσκαρ Καλύτερης Φωτογραφίας, η οποία κυκλοφορεί στους Κινηματογράφους από την Πέμπτη 2 Φεβρουαρίου.
Το 25ο Φεστιβάλ Ντοκιμαντέρ Θεσσαλονίκης πραγματοποιεί αφιέρωμα σε μία από τις πιο αναγνωρίσιμες φωνές του ελληνικού ντοκιμαντέρ, τον σκηνοθέτη και παραγωγό Σταύρο Ψυλλάκη. Οι ταινίες του, βαθιά ανθρώπινα υπαρξιακά δοκίμια, παρατηρούν τον κόσμο που μας περιβάλλει και εξερευνούν τον ψυχισμό των πρωταγωνιστών του.
March 15, 1943: The first train bound for the Nazi concentration camp in Auschwitz departs from Thessaloniki. March 2023: 80 years later, the 25th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival organizes a tribute, honoring the memory of the Jewish community of the city, that was exterminated during World War II. Bringing to the fore painful testimonies and shocking facts, the films of the tribute «Adio kerida*: From Thessaloniki to Auschwitz – 80 years» shed light to one of the darkest pages in world history. Τhe unhealed universal trauma act as a reminder and warning for the future.
*Adio kerida (or Adiós querida): A traditional Sephardic love song, written in Ladino, talks about separation, love, death. According to an urban legend of the Jewish community, ««Goodbye beloved» was sung by the Jewish people, just before entering the trains that would take them to the Nazi concentration camps.
The most shocking record of the horror of the Holocaust, «Shoah» (1985) by Claude Lanzmann, which has been voted the best documentary of all time by many film theorists, will be screened as part of the tribute. The mind-blowing 566-minute documentary will be screened in its full version.
Lanzmann worked non-stop for 11 years, conducting interviews with prison guards, witnesses and ex-Nazis and explored in depth the historical, anthropological and cultural impact of the Holocaust. A true cinematic accomplishment, Shoah ensures that the Holocaust will never be doomed to historical oblivion or fall under the excuse of ignorance.
In a special event, the power of music and the magic of cinema will come together on the stage of the Olympion theater. The «Golem» (1920) is an allegory for the tragic fate that would soon befall the Jews and is one of the first films to address issues of anti-Semitism. Directed by Paul Wegener and Carl Boese, this rare iconic film from the beginnings of German expressionism, paved the way for masterpieces such as Nosferatu and Metropolis.
The film draws inspiration from a medieval Jewish legend and today, beyond its historical value, is recognized as a cult science fiction gem. Beloved director and musician Yannis Veslemes wrote specially for the event an original score, which will be played live during the screening of the film.
The shocking film «Heroes of Salonika» (2021) by Tom Barkay focuses on the horrors of daily life inside the concentration camps. Six Jews from Thessaloniki, survivors of the Holocaust, most of whom live in Israel, describe in chilling detail the tortures, the extermination methods, the diseases, the starvation, the experiments they underwent. It is one of the rare times that we feel so deeply the brutality of Nazism and the extent of this universal crime.
In «Salonique, ville du silence» (2006), director Maurice Amaraggi, born in Thessaloniki, pays tribute to the glorious multicultural past of the city, called «Jerusalem of the Balkans», which comes into conflict with the narrative of a single national identity that prevailed after the end of the Balkan Wars. Combining images from the modern city with testimonies of Holocaust survivors, this nostalgic revival attempts to break the silence on the tragic fate of the Jewish community of Thessaloniki.
In the heartbreaking documentary «Children in Hiding» (2011) by Vassilis Loules, five elderly Greek Jews recount the terrifying experiences they had in occupied Greece during the Second World War.
Through the words and stories of people who lived the horror firsthand, we too become participants in a tragedy that will never cease to concern all of humanity.
The documentary «By-standing and Standing-by» (2012) by Fofo Terzidou traces both the rich history of the populous and thriving Jewish community of Thessaloniki and the less prominent path of the Jewish community of Katerini.
Through testimonies, evidence and analyses from historians, the film deals with the ever-present issue of official historical memory, exploring the destructive stereotypes that continue to this day to create prejudices and maintain the silence of the most inhumane crimes.
